About Shoalhaven River Oysters Inc

Shoalhaven River Oysters Inc (SRO) is a new organization established in March 2006 constituted according to the model rules of incorporation. It has fifteen members, which are listed on the Members section of this site. SRO Inc was intially formed to become a business cluster who can then apply for funding or market and promote as a group.

The Shoalhaven/ Crookhaven estuary, which is the location of all SRO leases, is mostly classified as "Conditionally Restricted", that is, shellfish must be depurated for a minimum of 36 hours prior being sold for human consumption. Comerong Bay Harvest Area has had a status upgrade to "Conditionally Approved" this means that oysters can be harvested and sold directly without the need for purification.

Twelve of the fifteen members lease their land-based depot from the Crookhaven Oyster Farmers Pty Ltd, who administers the land for the Crown. All farmers obtain their oyster leases from the NSW Department of Primary Industries – Fisheries and to do so, must have an aquaculture permit, which requires them to develop a business plan and have public liability insurance up to $20m. SRO members are the basis of a regional industry that dates back to 1870, which now contributes up to 2.2% of total annual NSW production of Sydney rock oysters and represents 72% of the total aquaculture industry in the state.
